CHEMISTRY DEMONSTRATION

BURSTING BALLOON

This demonstration was shown to class IX students online during Google Meet.

MATERIAL : Balloon, orange peel

PROCEDURE
1. Blow a latex balloon.

2. Take an orange peel and squeeze it hard enough to spray the oil from the peel at the balloon.

3. Observe what happens

OBSERVATION
The exposure to the citrus oil immediately pops the latex balloon.

EXPLANATION
Limonene is a chemical present in orange peel. It is a hydrocarbon that is used in many cosmetic, scented andcleanser products as well as things like glues and paints. Latex rubber is also a hydrocarbon.

Hydrocarbons will dissolve together if in contact with each other. So when the citrus oil touches the surface of the balloon, some of the latex from the balloon immediately begins to dissolve in the limonene. This weakens the balloon, causing it to pop.
