PHYSICS DEMONSTRATION

 BOILING WATER IN PAPER CUP

This activity was conducted and video recorded. The video was shown to students online through Google Meet.

MATERIALS : Paper cups, burner, water

PROCEDURE :
  • Turn the burner on medium heat.
  • Fill a paper cup nearly to the brim with water.
  • Using tongs, hold the cup of water and an empty cup over the burning element
  • Continue holding the cup and observe both the cups carefully.

OBSERVATION
When heated, the water in the paper cup starts boiling, while the empty paper cup starts burning.

EXPLANATION
When paper cup is heated containing water, water absorbs the heat coming from the burning source and thus prevents the paper from reaching its ignition point. Hence it does not burn.
